Manuscript Consultation
As your workshop facilitator, Vanessa Blakeslee will meet with you outside the weekly workshop session for a one-on-one discussion. Often the discussion centers around writing dreams, goals, ideas or questions you might have. Often a workshop participant comes with a manuscript on which he or she would like to receive feedback, and Vanessa will read over the piece and make suggestions--perhaps to make reading recommendations, or suggest that the writer offer the manuscript to the workshop group for feedback. Such meetings prove invaluable to the writer.
How does the manuscript consultation help you reach your writing goals? The work Vanessa does with individuals outside of the workshops varies; she lets the writers set the goals for their time together. In the past, she's read chapters of novels, poetry, one-act plays, single short stories, and helped writers select and edit work for submission to MFA programs in writing. She also meets with writers and help them set goals for submitting their written work.
Manuscript consultation includes a thorough reading of the writer's work, a detailed, typed response focusing on what's strong in the work, (as well as places where the reader was confused or "tripped up") and grammatical and syntactical suggestions. Vanessa always meets with the writer to discuss her comments as well: the typed response is for later reference.
Feedback is supportive. Vanessa dons her editing cap when she reads this work, but she also careful to exercise supportive, encouraging feedback to help writers continue to write, to build confidence around their work, and to see what's working. It always an honor to read someone's work, and she never loses sight of that during these consultations.
Should a workshop participant request further one-on-one manuscript consultation with the facilitator beyond the workshop sessions, the cost is $75 per hour.
